Celebrate National GSA Day on February 6, 2013!

For the past six years, Iowa has celebrated Iowa GSA Day during the last week of January. Last year, we took the celebration nationwide with National GSA Day on January 25, 2012; 23 states, 9 national organizations, and over 10,000 middle school, high school, and college students were involved. The second annual GSA Day will be held on February 6, 2013, and we need your help to make it bigger and better than ever!

GSA Day was started as a way to celebrate and honor our high school and college GSAs. Studies show that students who have a Gay-Straight Alliance in their school report decreased absenteeism and lower rates of name calling, harassment and assault. For decades, GSAs have been working to make their campuses safe places for all students regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. Students who start and take part in these student groups are brave. They dare to create a dialogue to improve lives. We believe that courage deserves to be recognized, to be celebrated!

Help us spread the word by “liking” our Facebook page or following us on Twitter! Tell all of your friends and help us make this a fantastic day of celebration!

Each high school and college group will be celebrating in their own individual way - all throughout the country. GSA Day’s Resources page has ideas for celebration as well as links to buy GSA Day T-Shirts and to submit to the GSA Day Video Campaign.

Check out our video discussing GSA Day and learn everything you need to know about participating in the campaign!

During last year’s first-ever National GSA Day, organizations from around the nation discovered their own unique ways to celebrate this special day. As you participate this year, feel free to use our suggestions or come up with something completely different. From Wingspan & Eon Youth Lounge’s GSA Day party in Arizona with spoken word performances and a DJ to the LGBT Coalition of Western Massachusetts’ celebration with musical guests and presentations by dozens of the area’s GSAs, the options for participation are endless. Just remember to be creative and have fun!

This year, over 70 state organizations are participating, with celebrations planned from California to Massachusetts. Use our list of State, National, Foundation, and Corporate partners on our GSA Day Partner page to find your state’s LGBT youth organization to learn what it has planned for GSA Day!

Lastly, keep us updated on what your group or organization has planned! Post on our Facebook page and let us know how you’re celebrating to help us spread the word about GSA Day and inspire others to participate!

National GSA Day is all about recognizing the outstanding work of students and the over 4,000 GSAs from around the U.S. We hope you join us in raising awareness of the positive influence GSAs have in creating safe schools and communities for all by celebrating GSA Day on February 6, 2013!
