West Bend school board to reconsider gay-straight alliance club tonight
WEST BEND, WI - The West Bend School District’s board has scheduled an opportunity to reconsider a previously-rejected gay-straight alliance for its high schools.
The board originally made the denial of the club’s request for official status.
That club has been around in West Bend for about a decade, but now they want to become school-sanctioned.
There was a demonstration outside the school in May.
The school board president is one of the board members who voted against official school recognition for the club.
“I was hoping they would accept that and go,” said Randy Marquardt, the school board’s president.
“They are obviously trying to make a bigger statement.”
“They’ll get to be just like everyone else, which is what they want,” explained Waring Fincke, an attorney who filed a lawsuit in support of the club.
“They want to have access to the bulletin boards at the schools so they can post posters about what they are doing.”
The West Bend School Board’s agenda says the board will reconsider the alliance club during a 7:15 p.m. meeting Monday night at Badger Middle School.
