Protesters rally support for West Bend High School Gay-Straight Alliance
WITI-TV, WEST BEND—Nearly 100 people turned up Saturday outside West Bend High School to protest the school board’s decision to block recognition of a gay rights group.
The West Bend Gay Straight Alliance has been in the school for nearly a decade but has never been offically recognized by the school. Students are trying to change that. Administrators approved the move but the school board voted it down.
The students have now filed a federal lawsuit to try to force the school to recognize the club. If the club gains recognition, it would be allowed to fundraise, hang signs, and be allowed to make announcements on the school’s intercom.
